Three women in Assam were hit by a train as they went for a morning walk near Bamunigaon Railway Station. The tragic accident took place as the women were crossing a railway track.
At approximately 5:25
a.m., two trains — an NMG goods train and the Ujanimukha Puri Express — were crossing from the station. The women heard a train horn and shifted to another track to avoid it, but were tragically struck by the Puri Express heading towards Guwahati, which was approaching from the opposite direction, reported NDTV.
Some locals claim that the Puri Express, running at high speed with an electric engine, did not sound its horn. As a result, the women walking alongside the track were unaware that the train was approaching from behind, said the report.
The deceased have been identified as Rumi Das (55), Korabi Malu (60), and Uttara Das (60), all residents of Boko village, nearly 300 metres away from the railway track.
“At about 5:25 am, an unfortunate incident took place when 03 ladies, who had come onto the railway track between Bamunigaon and Boko stations in the Kamakhya – Goalpara route, were run over by Train number 15643,” Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer, Northeast Frontier Railway, was quoted as saying by NDTV.
Boko Police have launched a probe into the matter and will review the security in the accident-prone areas.
Residents are calling on railway authorities and the government to take urgent action and introduce safety measures to prevent such incidents. They allege that at least 20 people have lost their lives in train-related accidents in the area over the last 20 years, said the report.
