North Korea called the US “shameless” for undermining the United Nations and accused Washington of a “hideous criminal act”.
AFP quoted a statement carried by state-run Korean Central News Agency, Pyongyang’s
mission to the United Nations in New York blasted reported plans for a briefing on its alleged violations of sanctions.
Instead, it said, “what should be questioned and openly discussed in the UN as the most important pending issue is the hideous criminal act of the US”.
“The US despises the existence of the UN itself,” Pyongyang said.
Though the envoys did not specify the act in question, the statement comes a week after the US’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
Washington’s “irrationality and malpractice of abusing the UN arena to satisfy its geopolitical self-interest should never be allowed”, North Korea’s mission said in response to the incident.
It also accused Washington of “shameless, illegal and immoral acts” and “trying to make a mockery of the UN arena for unilateral and selfish purposes”.
Recently, US President Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum directing the United States to withdraw from 66 international organisations, including the key UN climate treaty.
Announcing the withdrawal, the White House said that the decision targets bodies that the administration says no longer serve US national interests. The list includes 35 organisations that are not affiliated with the United Nations, as well as 31 entities that fall under the UN system.
According to an official statement by the White House, the Memorandum orders all Executive Departments and Agencies to cease participating in and funding 35 non-United Nations (UN) organisations and 31 UN entities that operate contrary to US national interests, security, economic prosperity, or sovereignty.
