Bengaluru News: With Janmashtami and Ganpati festivities approaching, many households are preparing to buy sweets, savouries and other festive food items. But before picking up your favourite sweets or gifting
a box to someone, you may want to know which food businesses were recently flagged during inspections by the health department.
Inspections across Karnataka found issues ranging from unhygienic manufacturing conditions and incorrect or missing labels to expired food products, suspected non-conforming samples and, in some cases, operations without the required food licence.
Food products were seized or disposed of at several locations, while notices were issued and legal action was initiated against multiple establishments. Some manufacturing units were also temporarily closed.
Here are the 17 food and sweet brands named in the department’s action report:
1. Asha Sweets, Yeshwanthpur, Bengaluru
During the inspection, suspected food products including approximately 49 kg of tea powder, 20 kg of Khova/Kalakand and 2.5 kg of pistachios were seized from the manufacturing unit.
Samples were also collected for further legal action.
2. Bikaner Sweets, Magadi Road, Bengaluru
The manufacturing unit was found to have unhygienic conditions and serious deficiencies relating to labelling.
In the interest of public health, the manufacturing unit was temporarily closed, and necessary legal action was initiated.
3. Lal Sweets Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru
Approximately 60 kg of packets of various food products, including Banana Chips and Chakli Masala, were found without mandatory label declarations. The missing details included the name and address of the manufacturer and FSSAI Licence Number.
The products were seized on grounds of misbranding.
The inspection also found fly infestation and unhygienic conditions at the manufacturing premises, which were considered likely to cause food contamination. A notice was issued to the unit.
4. Maharaja Sweets, Kalaburagi
The manufacturing unit was found to have unhygienic conditions and deficiencies relating to labelling.
The unit was temporarily closed, and necessary legal action was initiated.
5. Swagath Sweets, Mangaluru
The food manufacturing unit was found to be operating without the required food licence. Inspectors also observed unhygienic conditions and deficiencies relating to labelling.
The unit was temporarily closed, and necessary legal action was initiated.
6. Mithai Factory, Bengaluru
Officials seized 14 packets of Chikki with incorrect labelling.
They also seized 5 litres of expired Nandini curd and incorrectly labelled chocolate decoration materials comprising 13 large-size packets and six small-size packets.
7. Triveni Bakery, Hubballi
Unhygienic conditions were observed at the manufacturing unit.
A notice was issued and necessary action was initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act.
8. Mita Bharat, Hubballi
The manufacturing unit was found to have unhygienic conditions.
A notice was issued and necessary legal action was initiated.
9. Kalyani Sweets, Belagavi
Unhygienic conditions were observed at the manufacturing unit.
A notice was subsequently issued.
10. A1 Purohit, Belagavi
Approximately 10 kg of expired chocolate flavour was seized from the manufacturing unit.
In addition, 5 kg of Rasgulla was disposed of as per the prescribed procedure.
11. A1 Kunda, Belagavi
Inspectors observed unhygienic conditions at the manufacturing unit.
A notice was issued.
12. Sandesh Sweets, Bengaluru
During the inspection, four food samples suspected to be non-conforming were collected.
The samples were forwarded to the Government Food Laboratory for further analysis.
13. Word Of Mysore Pack, Mysuru
Several incorrectly labelled food products were seized, including:
- Ready To Eat Savouries – 367 kg
- Cocoa Powder – 4 kg
- Cracked Cocoa Beans – 4.5 kg
- Khova – 6 kg
The total estimated value of the seized food products was Rs 1.56 lakh.
14. Balaji Milk Khova, Bengaluru
Food products manufactured at the unit were found without mandatory label declarations, including Date Of Manufacture, Use By, Batch Number, MRP, FSSAI Logo and Licence/Registration Number, among other required details.
Officials seized 150 kg of Kalakand Khova and 250 kg of Khova, taking the total quantity seized to 400 kg.
The estimated value of the seized food products was Rs 77,500.
Unhygienic conditions were also observed at the unit, following which a notice was issued.
15. India Sweets, Bengaluru
Officials observed violations of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the Rules, 2011 at the food manufacturing unit.
A notice was issued and necessary legal action was initiated.
16. Venkateshwara Sweets, Bengaluru
Unhygienic conditions were observed at the manufacturing unit.
A notice was issued.
17. Popular Bakery Pvt. Ltd., Puttur
Inspectors observed unhygienic conditions at the manufacturing unit.
A notice was issued.
What Were The Main Violations?
The inspections flagged several types of food-safety concerns across the establishments. These included:
- Unhygienic manufacturing conditions
- Incorrect or missing labelling
- Expired food products
- Food products without mandatory label declarations
- Suspected non-conforming food samples
- Food products seized on grounds of misbranding
- Operation without the required food licence
- Potential contamination concerns, including fly infestation

What Consumers Should Know
The action taken was not the same against every establishment. While some units received notices or had samples sent for laboratory analysis, others faced seizure of food products or temporary closure.
The inspections come at a time when demand for sweets, savouries and other food products is expected to rise with the festive season approaching.
So, if you are planning to buy or gift sweets for Janmashtami, Ganpati or other upcoming celebrations, checking the packaging for mandatory details such as the date of manufacture, use-by date, MRP, manufacturer details and FSSAI licence or registration number can be an important precaution.
