Within eight to 10 minutes, the robbers forced staff at gunpoint to hand over jewellery, snatching around five kilograms of gold and diamond ornaments from the display counters before fleeing the scene. There were seven to eight staff members inside the shop at the time, while some others were out for lunch.
Eyewitnesses told police the robbers were speaking in Hindi and were holding guns in both hands while aiming at people behind the counter. As they escaped on motorcycles, the gang fired shots in the air to prevent locals from chasing them. In the haste to flee, one of the accused reportedly left behind a helmet at the spot, which police believe could provide important forensic clues.
CCTV footage from the showroom was being examined, and statements of the staff were being recorded as part of the investigation.
Authorities said security arrangements at the jewellery store, which opened in April, would also be reviewed and thorough investigation would be done in all angles.
