Former India captain Rohit Sharma entered his name in the history books on Wednesday (October 29) by becoming the oldest cricketer in the world to become the world No. 1 ODI batter. The 38-year-and-182-day-old
cricketer from Mumbai jumped two places on Wednesday to take the No. 1 position in the ICC ODI batter’s rankings for the first time in his career. Rohit replaced India’s captain, Shuman Gill, to take the top position.
Rohit, who had 745 rating points to his credit last week, scored 73 runs from 97 balls in the second India-Australia ODI at Adelaide Oval on October 23 and remained unbeaten on 121 runs from 125 balls in the third match played at Sydney Cricket Ground on October 25. The two big shows with the bat by Rohit helped him gain valuable rating points.
Rohit, who led India to the final of 2023 ODI World Cup, is the fifth Indian after Sachin Tendulkar, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Gill to become the world No. 1 ODI batter.
Gill has been dropped from 1st to third position now. In the three ODIs against Australia, he was only able to score 10, 9 and 24 runs.
Batting superstar Virat Kohli, after scoring back-to-back ducks in the first two matches, remained unbeaten on 74 runs from 81 balls in the third game at SCG, and he now has 730 rating points, up from 724 last week. He, however, remained at the No. 5 position.
