We all face moments of laziness and sometimes it can be hard to get anything done. Space X CEO Elon Musk shared a video on X featuring Scott Adams who shared a new perspective on how one should see laziness.
Adams, the creator of Dilbert comic strip, is known for his takes on motivation and productivity.
In the clip, which had an overlay text, “This guy literally explained how some people never feel lazy and how to copy them (in 2 mins),” Adams talked about the psychology behind why some people seem to never feel lazy.
Thinking About The Outcome
Adams explained that laziness often comes from focusing too much on the effort a task requires rather than the reward it brings. He shared “What if laziness is the habit of thinking about the cost or the effort, instead of the payoff?”
In the footage, which has received over two million views, Adams suggested that instead of dwelling on how much work something will take, we should imagine the joy or benefit it will bring. For instance, thinking about a delicious meal you are about to enjoy can motivate you to get up, rather than focusing on the effort it takes to prepare it.
He added a striking example from real life: Having children. “Why does a woman go through childbirth more than once? If she remembered only the pain, she probably wouldn’t do it. But when she focuses on the joy of having a family, the effort fades into the background.”
According to Adams, this habit of focusing on positive outcomes releases dopamine in the brain. This dopamine, in turn, energises people to act and complete tasks they might otherwise avoid.
Dopamine: The Secret Behind Getting Things Done
The video points out that ambition is more about how you think than how hard you try. Adams explained, “Am I ambitious, or do I simply have a thinking habit which produces dopamine because I’m thinking about the positive outcome? And the dopamine is what gets me up and moving.”
By concentrating on benefits rather than difficulties, people can naturally overcome procrastination and laziness.
