Tim David detonated a late-overs onslaught, backed by blazing contributions from skipper Rajat Patidar and Devdutt Padikkal, as Royal Challengers Bengaluru hammered Chennai Super Kings by 43 runs in their
IPL clash here on Sunday, turning the contest into a one-sided affair with both bat and ball.
Padikkal (50, 29 balls) and David (70 off 25 ) dismantled a clueless Super Kings attack with a stunning display of clean hitting, while Patidar chipped in with a whirlwind unbeaten 48 off 19 balls to keep the pressure relentless.
Their combined aggression powered RCB to a towering 250 for three, a total that always looked beyond CSK once the innings gathered full momentum.
CSK’s reply never quite left the runway either, as they folded for 207 in 19.4 overs, slumping to their third successive defeat of the season despite sporadic resistance in the middle.
Once Sanju Samson, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ayush Mhatre departed with only 30 runs on the board, the chase was effectively derailed and the visitors were left in salvage mode.
Pacer Jacob Duffy (2/58) inflicted the early blows in this collapse, dismissing Samson and Gaikwad, both of whom were snapped up by Padikkal at first slip.
Samson’s lean patch in the IPL with his new franchise persisted, a sharp contrast to his fluent strokeplay during the T20 World Cup.
The Kerala batter attempted an overly delicate steer against Duffy with a perpendicular bat when the more straightforward cut shot from that position would have been wiser, resulting only in a soft edge to Padikkal.
Mhatre’s dismissal handed seasoned seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar his 200th IPL wicket, making him only the second bowler after Yuzvendra Chahal to reach that landmark.
Sarfaraz Khan fought hard with a spirited 25-ball 50, but the required rate and scoreboard pressure made the task virtually impossible on the night.
Sarfaraz’s stay was ended by Krunal Pandya (2/36), and Bhuvneshwar (3/41) later removed Prashant Veer (43), breaking a 57-run stand between Veer and Jamie Overton (37) as the famed Southern Derby fizzled out without any dramatic finish.
Earlier, RCB’s charge towards a second consecutive victory was set up by Devdutt, who stitched together two vital partnerships — 56 (37b) with Phil Salt (46) for the second wicket and 58 (21b) for the third wicket with Patidar.
On a Chinnaswamy surface that initially showed a touch of slowness after CSK opted to field, those stands were crucial in giving the hosts a robust platform.
During the second-wicket alliance, Salt took on the senior role, stabilising the innings and counter-attacking to compensate for the early loss of Virat Kohli (28), who had a life on seven when Shivam Dube dropped him off Khaleel Ahmed.
Salt’s measured aggression, including a six apiece off Noor Ahmad and Anshul Kamboj, ensured RCB completed the Power Play in a strong position at 51 for 1.
However, Salt’s stay ended soon after the field spread, as he offered a straightforward catch to Ahmad in the deep off Dube, a moment that inadvertently shifted the tempo of the home side’s innings.
At that stage, Devdutt was on 18 off 17 balls, but he responded to Salt’s exit by upping the ante, launching Dube for two sixes and a four as the run rate surged beyond 10 an over for the first time.
The left-hander brought up his second successive fifty of this IPL with a single off Matt Henry, underlining his growing confidence at the crease.
His innings, though, concluded when an attempted reverse scoop off Jamie Overton went awry, sending his stumps flying and cutting short what could have been an even bigger knock.
By then, RCB had already plundered 62 runs between overs 11 and 15, and once Devdutt walked back, Patidar and David capitalised superbly on the solid foundation laid.
RCB stood at 153 for 3 after 15 overs, and they piled on another 97 runs in the remaining five overs, punishing some erratic death bowling from CSK.
Patidar and David were ruthless in their unbroken fourth-wicket partnership, sending the ball to every part of the Chinnaswamy and racking up 99 runs (36b) together.
Patidar targeted Khaleel in particular, who repeatedly bowled into his hitting arc, and the batter responded by smashing him for two sixes and a four in his final over.
David joined the carnage by clouting Ahmad for three sixes in the 17th over, keeping the scoring rate in overdrive.
The Australian then tore into Overton in the 19th over, belting him for four sixes, including three in succession, as CSK’s bowling frailties and wider team concerns were laid bare once more.
