Support from fellow filmmakers can often be just as meaningful as box-office numbers. Imtiaz Ali’s latest release Main Vaapas Aaunga has found one of its biggest cheerleaders in filmmaker Anurag Kashyap,
who took to social media to celebrate the film and encourage audiences to watch it on the big screen.
Anurag shared a black-and-white photograph of Imtiaz Ali on Instagram on Tuesday and posted a heartfelt message praising the filmmaker’s latest work.
“The fresh brand new @imtiazaliofficial. After his first film CHAMKILA, his sophomore film MAIN VAPAS AAOONGA is running in cinemas. Go watch it, and I love you Muttonkhor ❤️. Keep inspiring and breaking our hearts.”
The filmmaker didn’t stop there. In the same post, he acknowledged several members of the film’s creative team and jokingly accused Imtiaz of repeatedly working with some of his favourite collaborators.
“Aur mere humdumon ko chori karna band karo, humein bhi kaam karna hai (And stop stealing all my favourite collaborators, yaar. The rest of us have films to make too). Kudos to your partners in this heartbreaking crime @sylvesterfonseca @artb @purplehaze.png @arrahman @irshadkamilofficial #nayanikamahtani @dhiman.karmakar @sumanroymahapatra #shibashishsarkar.”
The post quickly drew reactions from fans, many of whom appreciated Anurag’s public support for the film. One user commented, “Need all the filmmakers to promote MVA just like you.” Another wrote, “That Muttonkhor was personal.” A third user added, “The film is awesome.”
This is not the first time Anurag has spoken up in support of Main Vaapas Aaunga. Earlier, he criticised the way theatres were allocating show timings, arguing that locally made films were struggling to secure adequate screens and favourable slots.
Sharing his concerns on Instagram, he wrote, “I totally understand that everyone wants to see OBSESSION, but it can still run longer with lesser shows. If we don’t prioritise our own films with better showcasing then I don’t understand how we will grow. Last week it was with BANDAR, this week with MAIN VAPAS AAUNGA, SING GHEETAM and GOVERNER. We have one morning show of MVA and maybe another in some cinemas, and the same with GOVERNER and no show of SING GHEETAM in Bengaluru, while OBSESSION is in 6-7 shows.”
Directed by Imtiaz Ali, Main Vaapas Aaunga features Diljit Dosanjh, Naseeruddin Shah, Vedang Raina, Sharvari and Banita Sandhu in key roles.
The film follows 95-year-old Ishar Singh Grewal, played by Naseeruddin Shah, who suffers a stroke while trying to travel to Sargodha in Pakistan. As memories from his pre-Partition years begin resurfacing, his grandson Nirvair, portrayed by Diljit Dosanjh, returns from England and starts piecing together a deeply personal chapter from the family’s past. The mystery surrounding Ishar’s lingering unrest forms the emotional core of the story.
Released in theatres on June 12, Main Vaapas Aaunga has collected over ₹6 crore at the box office so far. The film also witnessed growth on its first Monday, earning more than it did on its opening day.
