Sydney Sweeney has officially scored the biggest box office win of her career. The Housemaid, the R-rated psychological thriller also starring Amanda Seyfried, has crossed the coveted $300 million mark
at the global box office, cementing its status as a runaway success for Lionsgate.
The film has so far earned $116 million in North America and a staggering $189.1 million from international markets, taking its worldwide total to $305 million. Made on a modest $35 million production budget, The Housemaid is now firmly positioned as one of the most profitable mid-budget releases in recent years.
Released just ahead of Christmas, the film opened with a muted $19 million domestically but proved to be a slow-burning hit, powered by strong word-of-mouth and positive audience reception. Instead of fading after its debut, The Housemaid held steady well into the new year, showing rare staying power in a crowded theatrical landscape.
A Global Box Office Force
Internationally, The Housemaid has delivered especially impressive results. Nearly a month after its debut in several territories, the film topped the box office charts in countries including the United Kingdom, France, Mexico, Brazil, and Spain.
The United Kingdom leads the overseas haul with $36.4 million, followed closely by France at $33.4 million. Latin America has contributed $26.2 million, while Australia and New Zealand have collectively added $15.3 million. Spain rounds out the top-performing territories with $12.5 million, underlining the film’s broad global appeal.
Directed by Paul Feig and adapted from Freida McFadden’s best-selling novel, The Housemaid follows a young woman with a dark and mysterious past, played by Sweeney, who is hired as a live-in maid by a wealthy couple portrayed by Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar. As secrets unravel, the seemingly perfect household reveals a far more sinister reality.
Record-Breaking Milestones and What’s Next
With its $300 million-plus haul, The Housemaid has overtaken 2023’s rom-com Anyone but You ($220.2 million) to become Sydney Sweeney’s highest-grossing film as a leading actress. While she appeared briefly in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood—which grossed $392 million globally—The Housemaid marks her biggest box office triumph in a starring role.
The film’s success comes on the heels of last year’s box office disappointment Christy, which struggled to reach $2 million worldwide. The dramatic turnaround highlights Sweeney’s growing draw as a bankable theatrical star.
The milestone also marks a career best for director Paul Feig, surpassing the lifetime gross of his 2011 hit Bridesmaids ($289.3 million). Given the film’s momentum—and the fact that McFadden has written two sequels—a follow-up titled The Housemaid’s Secret is already in development, with Sweeney, Feig, and Michele Morrone expected to return.
