Leaders appointed as observers
The BJP on Tuesday named Union Home Minister Amit Shah as the party’s central observer for election of its legislative party leader in West Bengal. The party also appointed Union minister JP Nadda as its central observer for election of the legislative party leader in Assam. Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini was made co-observer for election of BJP’s legislative party leader in Assam, according to a notification issued by the party. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi was appointed as co-observer for election of the BJP’s legislative party leader in West Bengal, according to the notification.
The BJP ousted Trinamool Congress from power in Bengal and captured power for the third time in a row in Assam in results of assembly polls declared on Monday.
The Congress has begun the process of government formation in Keralam where the party-led UDF registered a thumping victory in the assembly polls. The party has appointed its leaders, Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, as observers to know the views of its newly-elected MLAs to decide the choice of Chief Minister.
Who is an observer?
An ‘observer’ is a senior party leader sent by the central leadership to a state to act as a bridge between the local MLAs and the high command. His primary job is to oversee the selection of the next Chief Minister.
What are the responsibilities of an observer?
Electing the Leader: He presides over the meeting of newly elected MLAs (the Legislative Party) to formally elect their leader, who will then become theChief Minister.
Ensuring Consensus: His presence ensures that the selection is smooth and that any internal rivalries or “fault lines” within the state unit are managed without causing public friction.
Reporting to High Command: He collects feedback from individual MLAs regarding their preferences for the CM and the new cabinet, then conveys this to the Prime Minister and the BJP Parliamentary Board.
Government Formation: He oversees the initial “blueprint” for the new government, including discussions on cabinet composition and portfolio allocation.
After the poll results
Amit Shah, with Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi as co-observer, is managing the historic transition after the BJP won 207 seats, ending the TMC’s 15-year rule.
Simultaneously, JP Nadda has been appointed as the observer for Assam to manage the leadership selection there.
The new West Bengal government is expected to be sworn in on May 9, 2026.
Essentially, the “observer” is the party’s official “referee” and “strategist” sent to ensure that power is handed over in a disciplined and unified manner.
When is Bengal’s oath-taking ceremony?
West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya on Wednesday announced that the oath-taking ceremony of the new government in the state will be held on May 9. Bhattacharya told reporters that the swearing-in ceremonywill take place at Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata from 10 am.
