Dev Deepawali 2026: Origin
The origin of Dev Deepawali is connected to the tale of Tripurasura, a high-powered demon who created havoc across the three worlds. He had received boons from Lord Brahma that made him nearly invincible.
With time, he became arrogant and started tormenting the gods and looking for help; the deities turned to Lord Shiva. It was found out that Tripurasura could only be destroyed with a single arrow that struck and burned his three cities at once.
Taking the form of Tripurari, Lord Shiva then mounted a divine chariot and shot a powerful arrow that destroyed the demon’s cities in one strike. To celebrate this triumph, Lord Shiva and the gods descended to Earth and took a holy dip in the Ganga, a moment which is marked as Dev Deepawali.
Dev Deepawali: Rituals And Celebrations
The main tradition involved with this festival is Deepdan, the offering of oil lamps to the Ganga. The grand Ganga Aarti is also a major attraction. Devotees perform Ganga Snan on the morning of Kartik Purnima, taking a dip in the holy river in order to cleanse their souls and seek divine blessings.
Dev Deepawali: Significances
Dev Deepawali displays India’s rich cultural heritage, while the diyas signify purity, peace and the advent of divine energies on Earth. The lamps and candles are lit, thus illuminating the city and denoting the triumph of light over darkness.
