After having a hearty meal at a restaurant in Rajasthan, when a customer got their bill, they were taken aback because it featured an unusual extra charge. They were charged a separate 10 per cent of their bill as “gas
charge”, alongside the usual GST components.
The customer later took to X to share the bill after they visited a restaurant in Jhunjhunu with their family for lunch. The bill for their meal, which comprised of 10 dishes, amounted to Rs 1,250. The restaurant then added 2.50 per cent SGST of Rs 30.75 and 2.50 per cent CGST of Rs 30.75. The customer noticed another charge listed separately as “gas 10%”.
The Restaurant Calculated The Gas Charge On The Bill After GST Was Added
“After GST, here’s the new tax!” the caption of the post read. “Went out for lunch with the family yesterday. Went to the restaurant and ordered food. Food arrived in 20 minutes. After eating, when I asked the waiter for the bill. The food bill was 1250. Then on top of that, 2.50% SGST – Rs 30.75, 2.50% CGST – Rs 30.75. Everything was fine up to this point, but below that, gas 10% separately.”
The customer claimed that 10 per cent of the original Rs 1,250 food bill would be Rs 125. However, the restaurant appeared to have calculated the 10 per cent gas charge on the amount after GST had already been added.
“10% of 1250 is 125, but the restaurant folks added GST and charged 10% gas on 1310 rupees. Meaning, in the country, everyone’s looting at every opportunity?” the post read. The bill showed a total amount of Rs 1,443.
