West Bengal is set to undergo assembly elections in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the stage set for a fierce contest between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
While the TMC — led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee — is eyeing a consecutive term, the BJP is positioning itself as the main challenger while working to build organisational strength in the state.

Voter participation in West Bengal has consistently remained among the highest in the country, reflecting the high political awareness and engagement across the state.
Voter turnout in West Bengal has remained higher than the 80 per cent mark over the last three assembly polls. Data from the assembly elections in 2011, 2016, and 2021 reveal that while the voter turnout has slightly declined over the years, it has remained higher compared with other states.
In terms of women’s participation, the gender gap in voter turnout has shrunk over the years. In recent years, women have started participating in polls in large numbers, sometimes even equal or higher than men.

In the West Bengal Assembly election in 2011, the state recorded a voter turnout of 84.33 per cent. The election marked a major shift in the political landscape with the TMC, led by Mamata Banerjee, defeated the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and ended 34 years of Left rule.
In 2016, the voter turnout stood at 83.02 per cent. This time, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) bagged a stronger mandate and regained power.
In the 2021 elections, the voter turnout stood at 81.76 per cent. Although slightly lower than the previous elections, it was recorded one of the highest voter participation rates in the country.

Although the gradual decline in turnout suggests a slight dip in participation, the overall numbers reflect high voter engagement.
