The Uttar Pradesh government is gearing up to boost regional connectivity with plans to build a new airport in Meerut district, near the National Capital Region (NCR). This move comes as infrastructure
development accelerates across the state, following ongoing work on the international airport in Jewar, Gautam Buddha Nagar. The new Meerut airport aims to further enhance air travel options and support economic growth in the region.
The Meerut Development Authority (MDA) had previously announced the airport project, and the UP government confirmed that land has been arranged for the runway to accommodate 72-seater aircraft. The land designated for the runway has been registered under Civil Aviation, signalling the imminent commencement of development work.
How Much Land Will The Airport Cover?
According to the Meerut Development Authority, around 46 acres of land have been registered under civil aviation, with dues already paid. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has requested the authority to arrange an additional 96 acres for developing facilities beyond the runway and constructing the airport building.
What Challenges Are Hindering Airport Construction?
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has stated that, in addition to the runway, 96 acres of land are needed for other facilities. The Meerut administration said it currently has 75 acres and is negotiating with farmers for the remaining 21 acres, a matter currently pending in court. AAI has also urged the administration to promptly remove other obstacles, including electric wires and poles.
Plans For Airport’s Second And Third Phases Discussed
The AAI has informed the Meerut administration that permission has been granted only for the first phase. However, 300 acres of land will be required for the second phase and 200 acres for the third phase. Currently, work that had been pending for 20 years is complete, and the land for the runway has been registered under Civil Aviation. Although this land was acquired from farmers, full registration was delayed due to incomplete payment from the government.
How Much Land Do Farmers Own?
According to the Meerut administration, the second phase of the airport will require about 206 hectares of land. Of this, 129 hectares are currently registered under farmers’ names. Negotiations are underway, and consent letters are being obtained from the farmers. The remaining land belongs to the Meerut Development Authority, Municipal Corporation, Forest Department, and Cooperative Dairy. Acquiring these lands from the respective departments will help prepare the framework for the airport’s expansion.
