The National Commission for Women (NCW) has taken suo motu cognisance of a crime reported from Mizoram, where a 26-year-old pregnant woman was found brutally murdered. The case has triggered outrage and
concern across the state, which is generally known for low crime rates. The NCW has termed the incident horrifying and has sought immediate action from the state authorities.
What do we know about the case?
The woman’s body was found on December 15, 2025, near the football field of Mizoram University in Aizawl. She had been reported missing earlier by her family. Police confirmed that the victim was two months pregnant at the time of her death. The manner in which the body was discovered, showing signs of extreme violence, has deeply disturbed local residents and students in the area.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, especially because it occurred close to a university campus, a place usually associated with safety and daily movement of young people.

Probe underway
Mizoram Police have launched an investigation into the murder. Senior officers visited the spot soon after the body was found and forensic teams were deployed to collect evidence. As of now, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been officially named. Police said all angles are being examined to identify those responsible for the crime.
Authorities have assured the public that the case will be investigated thoroughly, given its serious nature and the vulnerability of the victim.
NCW seeks swift and fair action
Taking strong note of the incident, the Chairperson of the NCW has written to the Director General of Police of Mizoram. The Commission has directed the police to conduct a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation. It has also asked for the immediate arrest of all accused under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023.
The NCW has stressed the need for trauma-sensitive support for the victim’s family and has called for steps to prevent crimes against women in the future. A detailed Action Taken Report has been sought from the state police within five days.
