Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has sparked an unexpected conversation among Indian audiences even before its global release. Social media is buzzing over the film’s climax, with many drawing parallels
between a pivotal sequence in the Greek epic and a famous moment from the Hindu mythological epic Ramayana. Netizens feel that the sequence has also been teased in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming adaptation starring Ranbir Kapoor as lord Ram. But what is this scene and why is being compared to Ramayana? Let’s find out.
What Happens In The Odyssey’s Climax?
According to viewers, the climax of The Odyssey features Odysseus reclaiming his identity by stringing his legendary bow and firing an arrow through a series of axes, a defining moment from Homer’s epic.
The sequence has reminded many Indian viewers of Lord Ram lifting and stringing the divine bow during Sita’s swayamvar in Ramayana. The visual similarity of the two scenes has led to widespread comparisons online.
While some social media users highlighted the resemblance, others argued that despite the similar imagery, the stories and cultural contexts are completely different. A few also noted that both epics independently feature the bow as a symbol of strength, destiny and heroism.
The bow contest:
In Valmiki’s Ramayana, Rama lifts and snaps Lord Shiva’s bow to marry Sita.
In Holmer’s Odyssey, Odysseus returns home in disguise strings his own bow to win back Penelope.
Ancient Greek mythology and Indian mythology sharing the same trope is fascinating. pic.twitter.com/gTS8vYiBXM

Ramayana Producer Addressed The Odyssey Comparisons
Previously, producer Namit Malhotra addressed the comparisons between his upcoming movie with Christopher Nolan’s directorial. He clarified that the film is not in competition with The Odyssey, but is an effort to bring one of India’s greatest epics to global audiences.
“With all the other epics that you just mentioned, the audiences in cinemas want to see something that is new and different. Their mindset is a lot more open to consuming different types of stories. I think we’ve all seen enough of the same fare. But I think now it’s about what new can we bring?” he had said.
