A “top rated” badge is seen as a sign of trust as it often shows the driver’s good record. But for one Uber user in Delhi, that label turned meaningless during a ride that felt unsafe from start to finish.
The experience was shared by the rider on Reddit where they described how a “top rated” Uber driver nearly got them “killed.” It involved reckless driving, sudden route changes and moments that made them fear for their life.
“I had a genuinely scary experience with an Uber driver today in Delhi and wanted to ask if others have faced similar stuff,” the user wrote.
‘Top Rated’ Uber Driver Nearly Got Me Killed: Delhi Commuter
The Redditor explained that things felt off right from the pickup. Their Uber app showed the driver was just two minutes away but the car took much longer to arrive. When questioned, the driver reportedly said his app showed five minutes “even though he was literally across the road and just had to take a U-turn.”
While this was “annoying,” the user decided to ignore it and continue with the ride.
Uber App Shuts Down Mid-Ride
Midway through the journey, the situation became more uncomfortable. The driver’s phone (the one running the Uber app) ran out of battery. Instead of resolving the issue, the driver asked the passenger to enter the drop location on Google Maps using another phone he had.
“That already made me uncomfortable because there was no Uber navigation or tracking anymore,” the Redditor added.
‘Near Death Experience’ On Highway
The most serious moment happened on a highway where traffic was moving at around 70 km/hr. According to the post, the driver suddenly decided he needed CNG urgently.
“Without warning, he swerved from the right-most lane all the way to the left-most lane, cutting across traffic. There were multiple close calls (read near death experience ) in just a few seconds. I honestly thought we might crash,” the commuter wrote.
Route Changes That Didn’t Match The App
After the highway incident, the rider noticed that the route no longer matched what their Uber app was showing. The driver appeared to be taking a longer way. When asked why, the driver allegedly said, “This is what my app is showing.”
“But my Uber app was still showing the original shorter route, and his way had already added almost 30 extra minutes. Then he took another random turn, again not matching the map. At this point, I was genuinely scared and just wanted out. I asked him to stop the car and let me get down immediately because I didn’t feel safe anymore,” they added.
‘Be Real Uber’
What shocked the rider the most was the driver’s rating. Despite everything, Uber had marked him as a “Top Rated Driver.”
In their message to Uber support, the Redditor wrote, “This can’t be for real. My app showed me that this man is a ‘top rated driver’. Be real Uber — you can’t label an experience like this as ‘top rated’. One bad ride is enough to make someone fear for their safety on this app.”
The Redditor also questioned whether such incidents still happen despite using Uber One which is often promoted as offering better drivers and cars.
“Mind you, I switched from Rapido to uber just because of the “safety” aspect and Uber One offering good drivers and cars!! Would like to know if this is becoming common or if I was just unlucky today. Is there something else I can do about this, (because I had to pay for 2 rides instead of one just because of this)?” the user concluded.

How Reddit Users Reacted
The Reddit post quickly struck a chord with other users on the platform, many of whom shared their own frustrations and experiences with Uber drivers,
One user commented, “These ratings don’t mean a thing. Also, there’s no such perks of switching to another app, since the same drivers are operating on multiple platforms.”
Another said, “That’s why he is top rated. He almost kills people but no one ever died. So ‘Delhi’ thing.”
“Very common. Top-Rated means nothing. Have got guys who behave like criminals and drive with zero concern for safety and with moronic road sense, and Uber does nothing despite complaints. The bigger joke is Uber Premier–I have sometimes got ‘Premier’ cars that are on their last legs and in such bad shape you worry for your life. Again, complaints to Uber just elicit standard AI responses; basically, customer communication just goes to their bin,” someone else pointed out.
“So sorry you had to experience this, I’ve experienced a lot of rash driving in Uber cabs and autos alike. It is scary and causes one to be constantly hyper vigilant. Did you complain? did they get back to you?” a person asked.
Separate Case From Noida Involving Five Women
In September, another Uber-related case surfaced from Noida. Five women were travelling together in a cab booked through the platform when a disagreement began during the ride.
One of the women suggested taking a different route to bypass traffic congestion. The driver allegedly dismissed the request and responded with derogatory remarks. When the passengers attempted to stop the ride, the situation escalated. The driver demanded money from the group. After they refused, he pulled over, got out of the vehicle, opened the trunk and threatened the women with a pipe.
