Users globally took to social media on Wednesday to flag that they were experiencing issues while using OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Users took to Downdetector to report cases.
At the time of writing this report,
any prompt in ChatGPT’s new chat or an ongoing conversation was turning up a “Hmm…something seems to have gone wrong” response.
“We’re currently experiencing issues,” OpenAI said on its page.
“We have identified that users are experiencing elevated errors for the impacted services. We are working on implementing a mitigation,” it further added.
OpenAI’s official status page confirmed the outage is impacting every feature of ChatGPT, including conversations, search, image generation, Codex, Atlas and more.
Yesterday, OpenAI launched the Codex app for Mac, which has proven extremely popular according to CEO Sam Altman. He revealed it achieved over 200,000 downloads on day one. Then today, Apple introduced an update to Xcode that adds agentic coding support for both Codex and Claude.
As soon as anything except Twitter goes down, the only correct course of action is search ‘ChatGPT down’ / ‘Instagram down’ on Twitter to make sure you’re not the only one right?

As reports of ChatGPT being down spread rapidly, searches for “ChatGPT down” on X lit up with users sharing reels, memes, and quick-witted quips. Many joked about suddenly having to rely on their own brains, while others humorously noted how they rushed straight to X to confirm whether the outage was global while OpenAI worked on the fix.
“As soon as anything except Twitter goes down, the only correct course of action is search ‘ChatGPT down’ / ‘Instagram down’ on Twitter to make sure you’re not the only one right?” wrote X user Mark Johnson.
