Michael B. Jordan might have had second thoughts about bringing his mom to the 83rd Golden Globe Awards. The actor’s mother, Donna Jordan, couldn’t hide her reaction when host Nikki Glaser delivered a cheeky
joke about her son during her opening monologue on Jan. 11.
Glaser, hosting the Globes for the second year in a row, playfully highlighted Jordan’s dual role in Ryan Coogler’s horror hit Sinners, where he portrays twin characters Smoke and Stack. “I can’t believe it, we got two Michael B. Jordans. When I saw that, I was like, Nikki B. Jerkin’, because that was awesome,” Glaser quipped, giving a risqué twist on Jordan’s full name.
The line drew laughter from the audience, but Donna Jordan, seated in the crowd with a drink in hand, rolled her eyes in response, an unmissable moment on the broadcast. Glaser immediately acknowledged the gaffe, smiling and saying, “I’m so sorry. That should’ve been a DM.”
Jordan, 38, has a history of bringing his mother to awards shows, and he is no stranger to celebrating family in the spotlight. This year, he is nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama, one of Sinners’ seven Golden Globe nods. He has also been recognised with an Actor Award and was honoured at the Critics Choice Awards.
Reflecting on his parents’ influence, Jordan previously told PEOPLE in 2020, “My mom and dad sacrificed so much to provide for my sister, brother and me. Honestly, it’s like they all have had such an impact on me and who I am and how I approach each day. Without that, a lot of things about me just wouldn’t be the same. So it all comes back to that foundation.”
Glaser didn’t hold back during her monologue. Beyond her joke at Jordan’s expense, she skewered One Battle After Another star Leonardo DiCaprio for dating younger women, joking, “We don’t know anything else about you!” She also playfully took aim at CBS, calling the network “the newest place to see B.S. news.”
