US President Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened a sweeping new campaign against Iran’s economy, warning countries and businesses that assist or trade with Tehran of “tremendous” economic consequences.
In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, Trump said Washington would pursue “Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale”, accusing Iran of failing to seize opportunities for a deal with the United States.
“Today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY! This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale,” he wrote.
Trump warned that any country allowing its financial institutions, businesses, airports or government bodies to provide a “lifeline” to Iran would face “TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences”.
He specifically called for an end to oil smuggling, currency swap arrangements, cash transfers, exchange-house transactions, ship registries and the use of front companies linked to Iran.
“This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY, and we need all of our Allies to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat,” he added.
Trump also claimed that these measures would cripple Iran’s ability to “project terror worldwide” and repeated that Tehran would never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.
“These maniacs are on the ropes, and these HISTORIC MEASURES will cripple them and their ability to project terror worldwide. IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON,” he concluded.
