Kapil Sharma is set to make his return to the big screen with the sequel to his 2015 blockbuster Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon. Known for entertaining audiences for years with his antics and sharp sense of humour,
it will be exciting to see him shine in cinemas once again.
Anukalp Goswami, the director of the sequel, who previously collaborated with Kapil in live shows, shared insights into his experience working with the comedian, the pressure of directing a sequel, and more in a candid chat with SCREEN.
Kapil Sharma Knows How To Shape A Humorous Character
When asked about Kapil’s creative process, Anukalp explained that the comedian has an extraordinary understanding of comedy. His instinct tells him exactly how to deliver a gag and which joke will land with the audience. Recalling his experience of doing live shows with Kapil, Anukalp shared that their work is always a collaborative effort, it’s 100% on paper, and then another 100% when they sit together and build on it.
He further added that working on a film is a completely different ball game compared to live shows. Kapil understood that even if there’s room for improvisation in the script, he would have to stay within the boundaries of his character while doing it. He added, “He can shine in both spaces, structural fiction as well as free-flowing live performance.”
Anukalp Feels People Get Offended Very Easily Now
When the director was asked why clean, family-entertainer comedies have become rare, he said that most filmmakers now lean towards below-the-belt or adult humour. He further explained that India has always loved family films because theatres are one of the few places where families go together. That’s exactly why, according to him, making a good family-entertainer comedy is not just important but necessary.
He stated, “Another reason great comedies aren’t being made is because people get offended very easily. Our tolerance levels have gone down.”
On Working With Late Asrani Ji
Anukalp remembered that he used to mimic Asrani Ji back in school and college. Describing his experience of working with him, he explained that the way Asrani Ji performed was indescribable. He said, “His craft, his timing, it was on another level. He even blessed us for having him in our film, which meant so much to us.”
On Crafting The Script And Stepping Into The Director’s Chair
Anukalp shared that he was confident about the script from the very beginning and genuinely believed the sequel would turn out “better than the first one.”
Describing his rapport with the legendary duo, Abbas-Mastan, who also directed the first part, Anukalp said the duo were incredibly welcoming and supportive, which is a huge boost for a first-time director.
Kis Kis Ko Pyaar Karoon hits theatres on December 12 and it will be interesting to see how the sequel fares.
