Constipation is not just a gut issue but also an annoying and persistent trouble that disrupts people’s everyday lives. Individuals dealing with constipation often experience bloating, a sense of discomfort
in their stomach, and other gut-related challenges.
Dr Rohan Yewale, consultant gastroenterology and hepatology, Apollo Hospitals, Navi Mumbai, recommends incorporating these nutritious drinks in your lifestyle for improved bowel activity. Speaking to HT Lifestyle, Yewale said sufficient hydration is critical to revive a person’s bowel activity.
“Constipation is one of the most frequent digestive complaints seen in outpatient clinics, particularly among adults with sedentary routines, irregular meal timings, or inadequate hydration,” said Yewale. “Morning drinks assist bowel movement through three mechanisms. They rehydrate stool after overnight fluid loss.”
“They stimulate the gastrocolic reflex, which is naturally strongest in the morning. They support gut lining and microbial health, which determines how smoothly stool moves through the colon.”
While pointing out that morning drinks should not be treated as laxatives, the doctor listed out these hydration choices to help the gut procedure and ensure the digestive system operates as smoothly as desired.
Warm Water
The gastroenterologist calls it the simplest and most reliable morning aid for bowel activity. Having stayed dehydrated for several hours overnight, the colon receives water from stool, which makes it slower and harder to pass. Drinking warm water upon waking up rehydrates the digestive tract and softens stool consistency.
Water With Soaked Seeds
Seeds like chia seeds are stacked with fibre. Soak these natural sources of fibre in the water overnight and consume them early in the morning. When fibre absorbs water, it forms a gel-like substance that ensures easy passage through the colon. Overall, water with soaked seeds increases stool bulk and moisture.
Fermented Liquid
This preparation provides our gut with good bacteria that boost stool frequency and consistency. Such drinks help restore a microbial balance and can be highly beneficial for those with irregular eating patterns. Experiencing constipation alongside gas or abdominal discomfort? Mild Herbal Infusions
Herbal drinks help lower the risk of constipation. Certain herbal infusions improve bile flow and intestinal movement and aid the overall digestion process. In contrast to stimulant laxatives, these herbal drinks never force bowel contraction or cause dependency. They support digestive secretions and gut reflexes.
However, if your constipation persists despite consuming these healthy morning drinks, the gastroenterologist suggests going for an immediate medical evaluation. Persistent unresolved constipation may indicate hypothyroidism, diabetes, medication effects, or pelvic floor dysfunction. Among individuals above the age of 40, Yewale noted blood in stool, unexplained weight loss, regular abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits as evident red flags to not ignore.
