Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to address some of the biggest challenges in education, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said on Thursday, as the Centre reviewed the ongoing integration
of AI in school and higher education systems.
Pradhan was speaking while chairing the third meeting of the Consultative Committee on the use of Artificial Intelligence in teaching and learning. The meeting focused on how AI is being systematically incorporated across the education sector in line with the National Education Policy (NEP).
During the discussion, officials reviewed efforts to integrate AI as a skill-based subject at the secondary school level and examined updates being made to higher education curricula to align them with emerging technologies and future workforce needs.
Speaking on the occasion, Pradhan said that AI can play a key role in tackling long-standing challenges in education, particularly by making quality learning more inclusive, accessible and equitable. He emphasised that the government remains committed to building a student-centric and personalised learning ecosystem to improve learning outcomes.
The minister also highlighted the need to address the diverse requirements of India’s student population while empowering both learners and educators through technology-driven solutions. Officials briefed the committee on various initiatives aimed at embedding AI into curriculum design, teaching methods and assessment practices.

The review comes as the Centre continues to explore ways to leverage digital tools and emerging technologies to strengthen school and higher education, improve employability and ensure that India’s education system remains globally competitive.
Notably, in October, the Ministry of Education said that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will soon become part of India’s school curriculum for all students from Class 3 onwards, starting from the 2026–27 academic session.
At present, over 18,000 CBSE-affiliated schools offer Artificial Intelligence as a skill-based subject for students from Class 6 onwards through a 15-hour module. AI is also available as an optional subject for students in Classes 9 to 12. Expanding AI education to younger classes would mark a significant shift in India’s efforts to build digital literacy and future-ready skills from an early stage.
