Iran’s Parliament Speaker and top negotiator Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Tuesday that the strategic Strait of Hormuz will not open until the United States fulfils Tehran’s demands, including lifting
a naval blockade of its ports.
“I want to state clearly that the Strait of Hormuz will not be opened until the American commitments stipulated in the memorandum of understanding,” Ghalibaf said in a speech broadcast on state television.
He reiterated that the removal of the blockade, the lifting of oil sanctions and the unfreezing of Iran’s assets were among the key demands.
The statement unfolded as the future of a 60-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Iran and the United States expired on Monday, August 17, with the rhetoric between the two sides intensifying.
