Amid the continuing government formation deadlock in Tamil Nadu, the BJP clarified that it has no role to play in Tamil Nadu Governor RV Arlekar’s decision to not give a nod to TVK chief Vijay for government formation.
The party also dismissed claims of Vijay being pressurised for opposing the BJP.
After his party’s blockbuster performance in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, Vijay staked a claim to form a government with 108 seats and 5 seats of Congress after joining hands with the latter.
However, since the alliance still fell short of 5 seats, the governor said Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) cannot form the government since the majority has not been established.
Speaking about the Governor’s decision, state BJP spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy said that the BJP has no role to play in the decision and added that if TVK is able to prove its majority, its proposal will be accepted by the Governor.
“It’s a fractured verdict. TVK doesn’t have a majority. They must prove their majority. The TVK can explore its chances. If he proves a majority, the governor will constitutionally accept it. There is no confusion with the Raj Bhavan or the governor. He will go by the Constitution,” he said, while speaking to news agency PTI.

Thirupathy said that the government formation will happen in a democratic way.
“The way the people have cast their votes reflects this outcome. Consequently, the electorate has voted in such a way that no single party has secured an absolute majority”, he added.
“According to our constitutional framework, the party that secures the highest number of seats specifically, more than half of the total and got the necessary support or backing is entitled to form the government. However, unfortunately, in this instance, no party has secured a majority,” the state BJP spokesperson said.
“I believe this is precisely the reason for the current confusion and they (Lok Bhavan) were taking the necessary time. If other parties come forward to express their support for Vijay, a stable governance will be established in Tamil Nadu,” he added.
Thirupathy further rejected the claims of Vijay being pressurised because he had been opposing the BJP.
“This is a democratic country. Elections happen here in a democratic way. Mr Vijay of the TVK has more seats. Everything will happen democratically. How can somebody pressure (someone)? These are all political rehtorics. I don’t think that is right. Whatever is constitutionally applicable will happen,” stated the BJP leader.
