A recent incident in Kolkata has brought renewed attention to an alleged pattern of organised dating scams. A seemingly ordinary date arranged through a popular dating app has since gone viral on social
media, highlighting how unsuspecting users may be lured into carefully planned traps under the guise of romantic meetups.
According to the account shared online, a young man matched with a woman on Bumble, and the two agreed to meet in person. The woman suggested a venue, a café near Ranikuthi known as ‘Couple Cafe Zone.’ Trusting the recommendation, the man showed up for what he believed would be a casual first date.
Initially, everything appeared normal. The pair ordered two cups of coffee and a hookah, engaging in conversation like any typical outing between strangers, getting to know each other. There were no immediate signs of anything unusual, and the man reportedly felt at ease during the interaction.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn when the bill arrived. Instead of a modest amount, the total came to a staggering Rs 8500. The man was left stunned, as the items ordered did not justify such a high charge. He later suspected that additional items had been added to the bill without his knowledge.
What followed made the situation even more distressing. The café staff allegedly surrounded him, creating an atmosphere of pressure and intimidation to ensure payment. When he turned to seek support or clarification from his date, he discovered that she had already left the premises. Reports claim she walked away laughing, leaving him alone to deal with the escalating situation.
With little choice in the moment, the man was forced to confront the bill on his own. He later took to social media to share his experience, which quickly gained traction and sparked widespread discussion.
The viral post has since triggered strong reactions online, ranging from outrage to cautionary advice.
“Bhai ne coffee pi aur Rs 8500 ka subscription le liya. Bumble Premium se bhi mahenga pad gaya date,” one user joked.

“I am from Kolkata and we have been warning people about these so-called couple zone cafes for years. Nobody listens until it happens to them personally. This racket runs deep, it runs organized, and local awareness has been criminally low. The boy is not stupid. He was targeted by professionals,” a third user said.

“This is not love,” wrote one commenter whose words have been shared over 80,000 times. “This is organized fraud wearing love’s face. And it will keep working as long as we stay silent about it,” a fourth said.
