Dehradun, May 10 (PTI) Authorities on Sunday urged Char Dham pilgrims and tourists to exercise extreme caution during their journey on May 12 and 13 following an ‘orange alert’ for adverse weather conditions.
The alert predicts rain and inclement weather across various parts of Uttarakhand, especially in the high-altitude hilly regions during the 48-hour period.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and snowfall in areas across hilly districts.
Officials warned of lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph at isolated locations in the mountains.
Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey advised devotees to stay updated with latest weather reports.
“Pilgrims should obtain the latest weather updates and plan their journey with full caution,” Pandey said in a statement.
The commissioner suggested that pilgrims might find it more convenient to travel once weather conditions return to normal. Recent data shows maximum temperatures have remained appreciably below normal in the hills.
He urged travellers to follow guidelines issued by the administration and local authorities to ensure a safe journey.
The annual pilgrimage, which draws lakhs of devotees to the Himalayan shrines, commenced last month for the 2026 season.
Pandey added that the state government is committed to making the Char Dham Yatra smooth and organised. All concerned departments have received instructions to ensure necessary preparations and safety arrangements are in place.
The official expressed confidence that the pilgrimage will proceed successfully through the cooperation and alertness of the devotees. PTI AKY NB
