Senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Monday described his emphatic win in Bhabanipur as a decisive political turning point, asserting, “This is Mamata Banerjee’s retirement from politics,” after defeating
the West Bengal Chief Minister on her home turf.
Speaking to reporters after emerging from the counting centre with his victory certificate, Adhikari underlined the significance of the result, calling it a crucial contest that carried both symbolic and strategic importance.
He stressed that defeating Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur marked a decisive shift in the state’s political landscape.
The BJP leader framed the mandate as a broader endorsement of political change in Bengal, linking it to the party’s sweeping performance statewide.
The Bhabanipur result came alongside a larger electoral surge that has positioned the BJP to form its first government in West Bengal, ending the Trinamool Congress’s long-standing dominance.
CLAIMS OF CONSOLIDATED SUPPORT
Detailing the voting pattern, Adhikari claimed that different communities came together in his favour, attributing his win to a consolidation of support across social and political lines.
He alleged that minority voters largely backed the TMC, while multiple other communities supported him, a claim he used to highlight what he described as a decisive electoral alignment.
He further asserted that support extended beyond traditional BJP voters, claiming that a significant portion of Left-leaning voters also backed him in the constituency.
Adhikari specifically mentioned that a large share of CPI(M)’s vote base shifted towards him, helping consolidate the anti-TMC vote.
Calling the outcome ideologically significant, he described the result as a validation of his party’s political positioning and credited a wide spectrum of voters for the victory.
MARGIN AND ELECTORAL DRAMA
The Bhabanipur contest witnessed intense drama through the counting process.
Banerjee initially led by a substantial margin in early rounds before Adhikari gradually closed the gap and overtook her in the later stages.
He eventually secured victory by over 15,000 votes, marking a dramatic turnaround in one of the most closely watched battles of the election.
The high-profile nature of the contest was further underscored by the presence of both leaders at the counting centre, reflecting the stakes involved.
Banerjee, during the process, alleged irregularities and termed the outcome “immoral,” though there was no immediate response from the Election Commission or the BJP to those claims.
Adhikari also linked his victory to the BJP’s statewide performance, describing it as part of a larger mandate for change.
BJP leaders, including Union Ministers, hailed the result as the end of the TMC’s rule, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi called for focusing on governance and avoiding political vendetta.
The BJP leader noted that senior party leadership, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, remained in touch during the counting process, reflecting the importance attached to the Bhabanipur contest.
The defeat of Banerjee in her own constituency is being viewed as a watershed moment in West Bengal politics.
