Indian summers turn homes into ovens and can mean higher electricity bills as the air conditioning is on more regularly. But did you know that certain plants act as natural coolers through transpiration?
This is the method that plants use where they release moisture into the air that lowers the temperature by 2-5°C while boosting humidity, making the summers a little more bearable.
These low-maintenance, heat-tolerant plants will thrive in India’s heat, are perfect for smaller window sills or can be placed on balconies, and even indoors. These plants do not need too much care to thrive and can work wonders even for those who do not consider themselves plant enthusiasts or have a hectic life. Just mist the leaves daily and water them when required to ensure they grow well.
Here are 6 plants that can lower temperatures in your home this summer season:
Areca Palm
Nicknamed ‘Nature’s AC’, this feathery frond palm originally is from Madagascar but works well in India’s hot climates as well. It transpires heavily, which means it adds a cooling vapour to dry air in the room. Place 2 to 3 of the areca palms in your living room, and it will reduce the temperature and also filters the air to an extent. It thrives in indirect sunlight and requires weekly watering. However, keep it in a room that has a tall ceilings as it can grow as high as 6-10ft indoors.
Snake Plant
This plant has sword-like leaves, which also give it the name ‘Mother-in-Law’s Tongue’. It release oxygen at night and stabilises the room’s temperature while purifying the air. It is drought-tolerant so it won’t die if you forget to water it and can survive harsh temperatures up to 45°C and more. Its upright leaves shade the floors and keep the sun rays from heating it up too much. Place it in the corner of the bedroom, as it will make the air cooler, especially at night, leading to better sleep. You have to water it fortnightly.
Aloe Vera
Known mainly for its beauty and skin benefits, aloe vera is a type of succulent plant. It stores water in its plump leaves, which can be used in beverages, skincare and the gel-like substance can soothe sunburns too. This water slowly evaporates and makes for a steady cooling. Place it in windows that recieve a lot of sun as it thrives in the heat and is perfect for bathrooms or kitchens.
Peace Lillies
It usually flowers once or twice in a year, especially in March and April. They are considered natural air-cooling plants, often used to help regulate room temperature and improve air quality. This plant can reduce dry air by releasing moisture in the room. Place it in the bedroom at night or the living room in the day to enjoy cooler temperatures.
Spider Plant
Arching green-white leaves create lush canopies that humidify and shade. They grow rapidly and is good for purifying the air. Hang this plant in baskets near the windows so that it filters the sun rays and heat coming into the home. Water it twice or thrice a week, and the best part it that baby “spider plants” multiply fast.
Money Plant
This vine heart leaves plant is also called ‘pothos’, and it trails from pots/shelves, absorbing heat via transpiration in low light. It is one of the most popular plants in an urban home and makes for a beautiful showpiece wherever it is placed. It is very easy to take care and needs negligible care.
