As 3 Idiots completes 16 years since its release, Boman Irani revisited Dean Viru Sahastrabuddhe aka Virus — one of the most unforgettable characters of his career. Strict, intimidating and rooted in discipline,
the character came to symbolise a rigid education system driven by ranks and results. Marking the milestone, Boman took to Instagram to share an AI-generated video of Virus, in which he is seen upside down, writing “Celebrating 16 Years of 3 Idiots” in a looping visual.
Directed by Rajkumar Hirani and starring Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Sharman Joshi, and Kareena Kapoor Khan in lead roles, 3 Idiots went on to redefine mainstream Hindi cinema with its blend of humour, heart, and sharp social commentary. Through Virus, the film held up a mirror to institutional pressure; his character became one audiences loved to fear and quote, with his dialogues and gestures continuing to live on through pop culture, memes, and everyday conversations.
3 Idiots received a very strong response when it released in 2009. Audiences loved its mix of humour and emotion, while critics praised its performances and message on the education system. The film broke box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Hindi film at the time, and also did well internationally. Fans of the movie are excited as there are reports that the film will be returning with a sequel soon. Sharman Joshi recently broke his silence on the matter recently. Sharman said, as quoted by Hindustan Times, “I so hope that happens, but I have not been informed yet.” He added, “On more than a couple of occasions, there has been buzz that the 3 Idiots Sequel is happening. The last time the reports came, it turned out to be for an ad campaign. Let’s see, hopefully this time it’s true.”
On the work front, Boman Irani will next be seen in The Raja Saab, starring Prabhas and slated for release on January 9. In the film, he steps into a distinctive new space as a paranormal investigator, adding another intriguing chapter to his ever-evolving body of work.
