Mumbai Indians (MI) set a bizarre bowling record on Tuesday night, as they locked horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in a rain-affected game in Guwahati. Frustration had already crept in as the players and
the fans had to wait for close to three hours for the action to begin. And once the weather allowed some game, MI bowlers were hammered left, right and centre.
The Royals went off to a flyer after opting to bat in the 11-over contest. Opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal humiliated Deepak Chahar, accumulating 22 runs in the first over. It turned out to be the most expensive first over bowled by a Mumbai Indians bowler in IPL history.
Chahar peeped Luke Wood, who had conceded 19 runs in the IPL 2024, bowling against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in 2024. Australia’s Jake Fraser McGurk had smashed 3 fours and a six in the first over, giving DC a super start back then.
Later, Vaibhav Suryavanshi stunned Jasprit Bumrah with a fearless intent. Facing one of the world’s best pacers, the teenager launched the very first ball he faced for a towering six, setting the tone instantly. He didn’t stop there. Suryavanshi struck another six in the same over, leaving Bumrah momentarily surprised.
Yashasvi and Suryavanshi lit up the game with a stunning power-hitting display, propelling Rajasthan Royals to 150/3 in a rain-hit 11-over contest. Jaiswal led the charge with a commanding 77* off 32 balls, blending class with aggression, while Suryavanshi’s fiery 39 off just 14 deliveries added early momentum.
The opening duo raced to 80 in only five overs, smashing nine sixes between them and taking the attack to the opposition from ball one. Jaiswal set the tone with a 22-run opening over, and Suryavanshi stunned Jasprit Bumrah with fearless back-to-back sixes.
Though Allah Ghazanfar picked up two wickets to slow things briefly, Jaiswal remained unstoppable, reaching a rapid half-century and finishing strongly to cap a dominant Royals innings.
