The government on Saturday refuted all rumours about a fuel shortage in India and fact-checked viral claims about India’s energy supply, stressing that supply remains stable. It also asked citizens not
to fall for panic-inducing misinformation circulating online.
“The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas categorically states that India’s petroleum and LPG supply situation is fully secure and under control. All retail fuel outlets have enough supplies. There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, or LPG anywhere in the country,” the official statement said, warning against a “deliberately mischievous, coordinated campaign of misinformation.”
Warning Against False Information
The government expressed concern over misleading videos and posts creating a false perception of scarcity, including misuse of global visuals and misinterpretation of official orders.
Calling such actions irresponsible, the Ministry warned that spreading false information about essential commodities is punishable under law and urged citizens to rely only on verified government sources.
“This misinformation is being spread by miscreants and amplified by motivated elements, causing unnecessary public anxiety,” the statement said.
No Shortage Of Petrol And Diesel
The government also emphasised that fuel availability across the country remains uninterrupted, with over one lakh retail outlets functioning normally and no directive issued for rationing.
Highlighting India’s refining strength, the statement noted that the country is among the world’s top refiners and exporters of petroleum products, ensuring domestic supply remains robust. “Not a single outlet has been asked to ration supply,” it said.
Crude Oil Supplies Secured Despite Global Disruptions
Addressing concerns over the Strait of Hormuz situation, the government said India has diversified sourcing, with supplies from over 41 countries compensating for any disruption.
“Crude oil supplies for next 60 days have already been tied up by Indian Oil companies. There is NO supply gap,” the statement underlined, adding that refineries are operating at full capacity.
Strategic Reserves Adequate
Refuting claims of critically low reserves, the Ministry clarified that India currently has around 60 days of stock cover, with a total reserve capacity of 74 days.
“Nearly two months of steady supply is available for every Indian citizen regardless of what happens globally,” it said, dismissing reports suggesting otherwise as misleading.
LPG Supply Strengthened
On cooking gas availability, the government reiterated that there is no shortage. Domestic LPG production has increased significantly, reducing dependence on imports.
“There is no LPG shortage,” the statement said, noting that production now meets a substantial portion of daily demand. Additionally, large volumes of LPG imports have already been secured and are en route.
The Ministry also highlighted that daily cylinder deliveries have stabilised after a temporary spike caused by panic ordering.

PNG Push Not Linked to Crisis
Clarifying speculation around the promotion of piped natural gas (PNG), the government said the expansion is part of a long-term energy strategy and not a response to any shortage.
“LPG supply is secure. PNG is simply a better, more affordable and highly convenient fuel for India’s households,” it stated.
