Why the ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ title is special
The ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’ title is special because it represents the highest honour conferred by the Republic of Seychelles upon international dignitaries.
The phrase “Blue Horizon” specifically relates to the “Blue Economy”. It honours leadershipin managing and protecting shared ocean ecosystems against the threats of overfishing, pollution, and rising sea levels.
Unlike typical civilian honours that celebrate general diplomacy, this presidential distinction specifically highlights climate action and environmental stewardship. The title marks the golden jubilee (50 years) of India-Seychelles diplomatic ties. It emphasises India’s active role as a net security and sustainability provider in the Indian Ocean Region.
Seychelles, an archipelagic nation, faces existential threats from climate change. Bestowing this title recognises global leaders who champion the environmental causes of vulnerable island nations.
