After playing Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Timothée Chalamet is all set to get into the shoes of a table tennis player. He will be seen in the upcoming sports drama Marty Supreme, which is a fictionalised
story loosely based on ping pong champion Marty Reisman’s personal and professional life. He was a five-time World Table Tennis Championships bronze medalist who became a showman for the sport.
On Wednesday, August 13, A24 released the trailer of the film, giving viewers a peek into what to expect from the film. Directed by Josh Safdie, the film’s trailer opens with Timothee’s character introducing himself as Marty Mauser, the gifted yet underestimated table tennis player, to a glamorous movie star, Carol Dunne, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. He tries to impress her, saying, “I’ve never talked to an actual movie star. You know, I’m something of a performer, too.” Marty becomes entangled in an affair with the actress as he navigates the chaotic ups and downs in his life.
Set in the 1950s, the trailer teases high-energy ping pong matches featuring Marty and gives a glimpse into the challenges he faces to earn the respect and recognition he always dreamt of. At one point, he explains the appeal of the sport to two persons, telling them, “I know it’s hard to believe, but I’m telling you, this game, it fills stadiums overseas. And it’s only a matter of time before I’m staring at you from the cover of a Wheaties box.”
Marty Supreme Is Josh Safdie’s First Film After His Split From His Brother
Marty Supreme marks Josh Safdie’s first solo feature in over a decade and his first directorial project since he worked alongside his brother Benny Safdie in the film Uncut Gems, which was released in 2019. It is also his first film after he parted ways with his brother. He co-wrote the script of the film along with Ronald Bronstein. The sports drama also marks Josh’s reunion with the A24 production company, and is being produced by Josh and Timothee alongside Ronald Bronstein, Eli Bush, and Anthony Katagas.
Who Else Stars In Marty Supreme?
Besides Timothee Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow, the film features a star-studded cast of Fran Drescher, Tyler, the Creator, Penn Jillette, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, and Abel Ferrara. The official synopsis of Marty Supreme reads, “A young man with a dream no one respects goes to hell and back in pursuit of greatness.” Marty Supreme is set to be released in theatres on December 25.
