Drone deliveries grab all the headlines and now Uber wants to pick up your food and deliver it to your doorstep from the skies. The company has announced plans to start delivering food via drones later
this year and intends to reach one million drone deliveries by the end of 2029.
Uber is working with drone companies in the US like Zipline, which has already been in the delivery business across the food and retail sector in select cities. Uber will be using Zipline’s fleet of drones to make the deliveries happen and some of the cities will get it first before expanding to more postal codes in the United States.
Uber Drone Deliveries For Food: Ready For The Future?
Uber and drone deliveries have been discussed widely before but using the medium to deliver food has been a concept so far which Zipline will deliver soon. The drone company has a history of making food deliveries with partners like Walmart and Chipotle and claims to have made over 2.5 million drone deliveries till date.
With the overcrowding of the streets and main roads, the sky has become the ultimate pathway to keep the deliveries going, and not just limit them to emergencies for helping medicines reach in times of need. Uber will be competing with brands like DoorDash and Wing that have joined hands to make drone deliveries happen in the US and have already expanded their delivery network across the country.
When To Expect Drone Deliveries In India?
Even in markets like India, Zomato and Swiggy, the local food aggregator service, have piloted drone deliveries for food orders albeit with limited reach owing to access challenges. It is still too early to say when drone deliveries will be market-ready and set to take off in the country but all signs suggest the involved stakeholders are keen to make it work and have it running on a bigger scale.
