Left-handed top-order batter Sai Sudharsan is part of India’s Test squad for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, but he did not travel to Sri Lanka with the rest of the Indian team players
on Tuesday (August 4).
Sudharsan, whose participation in the India-Sri Lanka series was subject to fitness, is currently at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru and is likely to join the rest of the Indian squad in Sri Lanka this weekend.
According to a report in Cricbuzz on Wednesday (August 5), Sudharsan is expected to join the Indian players in Colombo on Saturday (August 8).
He is all set to miss the three-day practice match against a local Sri Lanka XI in Colombo from Friday (August 7) but is on course to regain full fitness ahead of the start of the two-match Test series.
The first Test of the India-Sri Lanka series is scheduled to take place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on August 15.
As per the available information, Sudharsan, who made his Test debut for India against England in Leeds on June 20, 2025, is undergoing rehabilitation for a minor niggle in his big toe. However, he is on course to regain full fitness well before the series opener.
It has been reported that the 24-year-old left-handed batter from Tamil Nadu has resumed batting at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) and is expected to receive the all-clear from the CoE’s medical staff to join the squad.
Since making his Test debut for India in England, Sudharsan has played seven matches and scored 383 runs. In the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June, he batted at No. 3 and scored 81 runs in the first innings.
He also travelled to Sri Lanka with the India A team in June-July and played both matches against Sri Lanka A.
In the first unofficial Test, he scored 132 runs in the first innings and remained unbeaten on 7 in the second. In the second four-day match, played in Galle from July 2 to 5, he scored 168 runs in the first innings and remained unbeaten on 25 in the second.
If fit, Sudharsan will bat at No. 3 for India in the Test series against Sri Lanka. In case he fails to regain fitness, Karnataka batter Devdutt Padikkal is likely to take his place at No. 3 in the away series.
