CPI December Data 2025: India’s headline retail inflation, based on the the Consumer Price Index (CPI), rose to 1.33% in December 2025, up from 0.71% in November, according to monthly data of the Ministry
of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
Headline inflation still remains below than RBI’s tolerable band between 4-6 per cent.
The government attributed the increase in overall inflation mainly to higher prices of vegetables, meat and fish, eggs, spices, pulses, and personal care items.
Urban areas continued to see higher inflation than rural regions. Urban CPI inflation rose to 2.03% in December, from 1.40% in November. In contrast, rural inflation increased to 0.76%, up from 0.10% a month ago.
On the housing front, inflation eased to 2.86 per cent in December. While education and health also softened to 3.32 per cent and 3.43 per cent, respectively.
Among major states, Kerala recorded the highest inflation at 9.49%, followed by Karnataka (2.99%), Andhra Pradesh (2.71%), Tamil Nadu (2.67%), and Jammu & Kashmir (2.26%).
This is the last CPI release with the base year 2012=100. For the next CPI, the base year 2024=100 will be used. marking a key shift in inflation tracking methodology.
