World Environment Day is observed annually on June 5 and is the United Nations’ flagship platform for environmental outreach and awareness. Led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the day

World Environment Day 2026: History
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 following the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment, the first major international conference focused on environmental issues. The inaugural celebration took place in 1973, creating a global platform to raise awareness and encourage action on environmental challenges.
Over the decades, the annual observance has addressed a wide range of concerns, from biodiversity conservation and ecosystem restoration to sustainable consumption and pollution control.
