The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday released its first list of 88 candidates for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, fielding chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from the Jalukbari seat.
The
first list features the name of new joinee Pradyut Bordoloi, who joined the party on Wednesday, just a day after quitting Congress. Bordoloi has been fielded from Assam’s Dispur Assembly seat.
Former Assam Congress Chief Bhupen Kumar Borah, who also joined the BJP recently after leaving the Congress, will contest from Bihpuria in the upcoming state Assembly polls.
Madhavi Das will enter the fray from Birsing-Jarua, Jyotsana Kalita from Chamaria and Nilima Devi from Mangaldai.
The first list of candidates was finalised by the BJP’s Central Election Committee at its meeting presided over by party president Nitin Nabin.
The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other members of the BJP poll body.

Assam Assembly Polls 2026
Assam is set to go to the polls on April 9 and counting of votes will take place on May 4 for the 126-member Assembly.
In 2021 Assam elctions, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) along with its allies won 75 of the state’s 126 Assembly constituencies. BJP alone managed to register win on 60 seats, while its alliance partners Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) won 9 seats and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) won 6 seats.
Whereas the Congress-led grand alliance won 50 seats and Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal won 1 seat out of the total 126 seats.
