Homi Adajania’s upcoming romantic film Cocktail 2 is all set to hit theatres on June 19, making it one of the most anticipated releases. The original Cocktail (2012), starring Deepika Padukone, Saif Ali
Khan and Diana Penty, was widely appreciated for its modern take on love, friendship and complex relationships. Now, 14 years later, the spiritual sequel Cocktail 2 is gearing up for release, and it has already sparked several questions among fans. Does the film have a connection to the original movie? What can audiences expect from the story? Here’s everything you need to know before watching the movie in theatres!
Cast
The film stars Shahid Kapoor, Kriti Sanon, and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead roles. Shahid Kapoor portrays Kunal, while Kriti Sanon plays Ally and Rashmika Mandanna appears as Diya.
Directed by Homi Adajania, the film is co-written by Luv Ranjan and Tarun Jain, and produced by Dinesh Vijan, Luv Ranjan, and Ankur Garg under Maddock Films and Luv Films.
Certification And Runtime
Ahead of its release, Cocktail 2 has been awarded an ‘A’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The romantic drama reportedly has a runtime of 150 minutes, which is approximately two and a half hours. The film’s duration is slightly longer than the original Cocktail (2012), which ran for 146 minutes.
What We Know About The Plot
Cocktail 2 is said to revolve around a complex emotional triangle involving Diya, Kunal, and Ally. After a decade-long relationship, Diya and Kunal’s bond is put to the test when Ally, an old friend, re-enters their lives. What starts as a plan between two women soon unravels into chaos, setting off a mix of humour and emotional turmoil none of them expected.
While official plot details remain under wraps, earlier online rumours suggested that Cocktail 2 would be a lesbian love story. However, these claims are untrue. At the trailer launch, the team clarified that the film does not explore a lesbian romance.
Meanwhile, at a recent promotional event, Kriti Sanon once again reiterated, “There is no lesbian story.” Rashmika Mandanna laughed and said, “But we do have that chemistry.” Kriti added, “There are three straight people, guys, relax. It’s an emotional film; there is no physical threesome.” Rashmika said, “Watch the film, guys. You will enjoy.”
Is Cocktail 2 Connected To The First Film?
While it carries the legacy of the beloved 2012 hit, Cocktail 2 is a spiritual successor rather than a direct continuation of the original plot. Instead of continuing the lives of Saif Ali Khan, Deepika Padukone, and Diana Penty, the project introduces a brand-new universe with entirely fresh characters.
During Times Now Summit 2026, Kriti confirmed that Cocktail 2 is neither a sequel nor a remake of the first film. “It’s a franchise,” she clarified. “It’s more of a vibe like Cocktail, which is also there in Cocktail 2. There are two girls and one boy. The language and vibe are in a similar zone, similar world—but a very different story and very different characters. There’s absolutely no relation to Cocktail otherwise, except that it has a mix—a cocktail—of emotions, friendship, drama, music, and amazing locations,” she said.
