In today’s fast-paced lifestyles, fatigue, poor sleep, and chronic stress have become increasingly common. Ayurveda, India’s ancient system of holistic healing, offers simple, time-tested daily routines
(Dinacharya) that can be seamlessly integrated into modern life to restore balance and improve overall well-being. We spoke to Dr Rekha Bhat, Ayurveda Specialist, SOUKYA International Holistic Health Centre, who shares a few easy and basic Ayurveda practices that everyone can incorporate into their routine to lead a better life.
A key principle in Ayurveda is aligning the body with natural rhythms. Waking up early, ideally between 5:00 and 6:00 am before the onset of sluggishness, is considered highly beneficial. This time of the day is associated with mental clarity and calmness, helping set a positive tone and sustained energy for the rest of the day.
Hydration plays an equally important role. Drinking one or two glasses of warm water in the morning, either plain or infused with ingredients such as cumin, coriander, or fenugreek, helps stimulate digestion, support bowel movements, and gently activate the body’s internal systems.
Oral detoxification practices like oil pulling are another simple yet effective addition. Swishing oil in the mouth helps remove toxins, improve taste perception, strengthen the gums, and indirectly support digestive health.
Self-care rituals such as Abhyanga (oil massage) have profound benefits for both the body and mind. Applying warm oil to the body and scalp at least 2-3 times a week, ideally 30 minutes before a shower, helps calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and improve circulation. Similarly, Padabhyanga (foot massage) with warm sesame oil before bedtime is known to enhance sleep quality while reducing anxiety and overthinking.
Exposure to natural sunlight in the morning, combined with gentle stretching, yoga, or light exercise, plays a crucial role in regulating the circadian rhythm. This not only improves energy levels during the day but also supports better sleep at night.
Dietary habits are equally central to maintaining balance. Ayurveda emphasises eating freshly prepared, nutritious meals at regular times to stabilise energy levels. Avoiding constant snacking, along with reducing intake of cold foods and iced beverages, helps preserve digestive strength (Agni), preventing fatigue and mental fog.
Finally, mindful unwinding in the evening is essential. Reducing screen exposure after 8:00 pm allows the body to align with its natural hormonal cycles, promoting deeper and more restorative sleep.
These Ayurvedic routines are simple, practical, and adaptable. When followed consistently, they can significantly improve energy, enhance sleep quality, and reduce stress, making them highly relevant even in modern-day living.
