Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said India’s UPI is now live in 11 countries and our next aim should be to connect with other countries’ payment systems.
Speaking at Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026
in Mumbai, the Prime Minister said remittances using UPI can help save transaction costs and time.
“UPI has reached several places. But this is just the first step. Connecting to the payment systems of those countries should be our next goal. We did this with Singapore. We have to build this connection with other countries and markets. We will have to go ahead with this goal. Wherever Indians live in large numbers, wherever India trades on a large scale, whichever country in the world is ready to walk with us, we will have to work to connect them all,” he said.
PM Modi said non-payment transactions should be the next chapter for the Indian fintech sector.
“Just a few days ago, on August 25, UPI completed 10 years. Ten years ago, when I used to say that your bank would be at your fingertips, some people thought it was impossible. And I am talking about well-informed people. Remember their faces. I am not talking about those crores of Indians who did not have bank accounts then or had only recently opened them. Many generations of theirs had never even seen the door of a bank. But look at the situation today, 10 years later. Those same crores of people who had been outside the banking system for generations have become major drivers of fintech growth in India,” he added.
