With 45,365 government school buildings in Rajasthan identified as needing major repairs and 611 schools still functioning without buildings, the state government has drawn up a Rs 12,500-crore, three-year
infrastructure roadmap to overhaul its government school network, CNN-NEWS18 has learnt.
The scale of Rajasthan’s school infrastructure challenge is stark. The CJP has been conducting surprise inspections in state schools to expose the same.
In January this year, the state government told the Rajasthan Assembly that 45,365 school buildings needed major repairs. The figure comes from a survey conducted in August 2025, which covered 65,308 government schools across the state. In other words, nearly seven out of every 10 school buildings surveyed were found to require major repairs.
The survey also identified 3,768 schools as being in a dilapidated condition. And the infrastructure gap goes beyond buildings that need repair.
In a separate reply to a question by Congress MLA and Rajasthan Leader of Opposition Tika Ram Jully, the state government said that according to UDISE+ 2025-26 data, 611 schools in Rajasthan were functioning without their own buildings. Ten of these were girls’ schools.
Against this backdrop, the Rajasthan government has now prepared a Rs 12,500-crore three-year roadmap for school infrastructure, covering the financial years 2026-27 to 2028-29.
The plan envisages construction of 3,587 new school buildings, with Rs 2,487.75 crore earmarked for the work.
The bigger component is classrooms. The government plans to construct 83,783 new classrooms, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 8,378.30 crore.
Major repair and renovation work will also be taken up across 22,589 schools, with Rs 1,129.45 crore proposed for the work.
Another 13,616 new toilet blocks have been proposed at a cost of around Rs 340.40 crore.
The government says technical surveys of school buildings have been carried out across all 41 districts, following which the infrastructure plan has been prepared according to the requirements identified on the ground.
One of the schools that illustrates the problem is Rajkiya Prathamik School, Rampura Kanwarpura. The school was declared a dilapidated building in 2025, and construction of a new building is scheduled to begin on September 1.
The new building has been sanctioned with Rs 12 lakh from DMFT funds and Rs 6 lakh from the MLA fund. The school is among the institutions that have brought the wider issue of Rajasthan’s government-school infrastructure into sharper focus.
Apart from the larger three-year roadmap, the government has also listed immediate infrastructure works. A total of 614 new school buildings are to be constructed, while major repair work will be undertaken in another 2,750 schools.
The government’s stated objective is to turn government schools into safe, modern, inclusive and technology-enabled education centres.
The infrastructure push also comes with a technology component. The government plans to spend around Rs 1,087 crore by December 2026 on digital facilities, including thousands of smart classrooms, tablets and ICT labs.
But the numbers on the ground underline the size of the task. With 45,365 buildings requiring major repairs, 3,768 classified as dilapidated and 611 schools functioning without buildings, the three-year roadmap will have to bridge a substantial infrastructure deficit.
The Rs 12,500-crore plan, therefore, is not merely an expansion programme. For Rajasthan’s government schools, it is also an attempt to address a long-standing problem of buildings that are unsafe, inadequate or simply missing altogether.
