Filming schedules in Hollywood don’t always go as planned and sometimes, even action heroes need a breather. That’s exactly what’s happening with Tomb Raider, where a brief pause has been called following
an unexpected development involving its lead star.
Production on the upcoming Tomb Raider series, headlined by Sophie Turner, has been temporarily halted after the actor sustained what has been described as a minor injury. The project, created by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, is currently in production for Prime Video.
Confirming the development, the studio issued a statement to Deadline, saying, “Sophie Turner recently experienced a minor injury. As a precaution, production has briefly paused to allow her time to recover. We look forward to resuming production as soon as possible.” While the exact circumstances of the injury remain unclear, it has not been confirmed whether it occurred during filming.
According to reports, the pause in production is expected to last approximately two weeks. During this period, the crew will continue to be compensated.
The series, backed by Amazon MGM Studios in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics, officially went into production earlier this year. On January 15, the studio unveiled a first-look image of Turner in the role of Lara Croft, marking a significant step for the long-anticipated adaptation. Filming is primarily taking place in the United Kingdom.
Tomb Raider is based on the globally popular video game franchise that follows the adventures of archaeologist Lara Croft. Since the debut of the first game in 1996, the character has become one of the most recognisable figures in gaming history.
In fact, Lara Croft was named the “Most Successful Human Videogame Heroine” by the Guinness World Records in 2006. Over the years, the franchise has expanded beyond gaming, with six titles released and three major films produced.
The film adaptations previously featured Angelina Jolie in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, while Alicia Vikander took on the role in the more recent Tomb Raider reboot.
The new series also boasts an extensive ensemble cast, including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Martin Bobb-Semple, Jack Bannon, John Heffernan, Bill Paterson, Paterson Joseph, Sasha Luss, Juliette Motamed, Celia Imrie, and August Wittgenstein.
Behind the scenes, Waller-Bridge serves as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner, alongside Chad Hodge. Jonathan Van Tulleken is attached as director and executive producer. The project is produced by Wells Street Films, Story Kitchen, and Legendary Television, with several key industry names attached as executive producers.
With production expected to resume soon, the team is likely aiming to get things back on track once Turner has fully recovered.
