Train travel in India has entered a new phase with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper in 2026. The new sleeper variant marks a major upgrade in long-distance overnight journeys, offering faster,
more comfortable, and modern rail travel for passengers.
According to updates from Indian Railways and the Press Information Bureau, the service is expected to transform overnight connectivity, including key routes such as between Mumbai and Bengaluru.
First Route And Expanding Network
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper service was launched in January 2026 between Howrah in West Bengal and Kamakhya in Guwahati, Assam. Now, attention has shifted to the next major corridor: the upcoming Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper train.
According to a report in The Times Of India, this route is also expected to indirectly benefit passengers travelling to Pune, one of the busiest transit hubs along the corridor.
The announcement was officially confirmed in a communication by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw dated April 5. The development gained wider public attention after Bengaluru Central MP PC Mohan shared the official letter on social media platform X.

Travel Time Could Drop To 12-13 Hours
Currently, the journey between Pune and Bengaluru takes more than 18 hours by conventional trains, covering a distance of around 938 km.
With the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper service on the Mumbai-Bengaluru corridor, travel time is expected to reduce significantly, potentially bringing it down to nearly 12-13 hours, based on projections from the approved route plan.
Route And Key Connectivity
The Mumbai-Bengaluru sleeper service is expected to pass through major railway junctions, with Pune forming a key stop along the route. This will strengthen connectivity between important economic and educational hubs across western and southern India.

Expected Fare Structure
While official fares have not yet been announced, early indications from the first Vande Bharat Sleeper route suggest a premium but competitive pricing structure. AC First Class is expected to be priced higher, reflecting enhanced comfort and facilities.
The Bengaluru-Pune route is a crucial corridor connecting IT hubs, educational centres, and major cultural and business destinations. The introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper is part of a broader vision by Indian Railways to modernise overnight travel and elevate passenger experience.
