As temperatures rise, skincare begins to demand a different kind of attention, one that prioritises lightness, balance, and consistency over complexity. Summer is not the season for overloading your skin;
instead, it’s about refining your routine to work with the environment, not against it.
At its core, a summer-proof routine is less about adding more and more about choosing better.
For Sejal Shinde, founder, Communal, the shift begins with simplifying what you already use. “Summer skincare is all about simplifying your routine while being consistent,” she says, emphasising breathable layering over heavy formulations. A gentle cleanser, followed by a hydrating serum and a lightweight moisturiser, forms the foundation, products that hydrate without clogging pores or feeling heavy in the heat.
This idea of lightness is echoed across experts. Nitika Garg, founder, Sonrisa points out that summer routines need to be intentional rather than overwhelming. Strengthening the skin barrier, she explains, is where everything begins. Gel-based moisturisers infused with ingredients like hyaluronic acid help maintain hydration while keeping the skin comfortable and balanced.
Sunscreen, unsurprisingly, remains the non-negotiable step. Shinde calls it the cornerstone of any summer routine, recommending sweat-resistant formulas that feel comfortable enough for daily wear, because consistency matters as much as the product itself. Garg reinforces this, advising the use of a broad-spectrum SPF 50, with reapplication every four to five hours to ensure continued protection through the day.
Beyond protection, summer skincare is also about repair and resilience. Shinde suggests incorporating calming ingredients such as aloe vera or niacinamide to soothe skin exposed to sun and pollution. Garg, on the other hand, recommends adding antioxidants like Vitamin C to your morning routine, if suited to your skin type to help combat sun-induced damage and boost overall radiance over time.
That said, restraint is just as important as inclusion. Both experts caution against overdoing actives during the day. Shinde advises reserving stronger treatments for nighttime repair, allowing the skin to recover without additional daytime stress. Garg echoes this balance when it comes to exfoliation, once or twice a week is enough to keep pores clear and improve product absorption, but over-exfoliating can compromise the skin barrier, especially when paired with sun exposure.
Small, thoughtful additions can also make a difference. Garg recommends finishing your routine with a hydrating lip mask, an often-overlooked step that helps maintain moisture in harsh summer conditions.
Ultimately, the guiding principle remains simple: listen to your skin. As Shinde notes, summer can be unpredictable, and your routine should be flexible enough to adapt. Garg adds that consistency with trusted products is far more effective than constantly experimenting with new ones.
Because when it comes to summer skincare, less isn’t just more, it’s smarter.
