Amid intensifying rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), rebel party MPs are likely to merge with another political outfit and subsequently extend support to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance
(NDA) at the Centre.
According to sources, such a move would help overcome the technical and legal hurdles associated with forming a separate parliamentary group. The merged entity is expected to be named the Nationalist Citizen Party, with its primary political focus centred on West Bengal, Assam and Tripura.
Rebel MPs Eye Merger, NDA Backing
While no official announcement has been made, sources indicated that the proposal is being actively considered as the dissident camp explores its future political course.
This development comes after the rebel faction gathered at Union Minister Bhupender Yadav’s residence in Delhi on Sunday before heading to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla’s residence.
Dissidents Meet Yadav Before Visiting LS Speaker House
Among those who attended the meeting at Yadav’s house were Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sudip Bandyopadhyay, Satabdi Roy, Saayoni Ghosh, Mala Roy, Bapi Halder and Prasun Banerjee. BJP MP Nishikant Dubey was also present at Yadav’s residence.
The development marks a dramatic escalation of the crisis that has gripped the TMC since its poll loss in West Bengal. In recent days, several MPs have openly broken ranks with the party leadership, citing concerns over the political situation in the state and expressing support for the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre.
The dissident camp had earlier submitted a letter seeking recognition as a separate parliamentary group under the leadership of Dastidar. A document bearing the signatures of 19 TMC MPs surfaced on Friday, fuelling speculation that the party’s Lok Sabha contingent could witness a major split.
Earlier in the day, Dastidar claimed that two more parliamentarians were set to join the dissident camp, taking its strength in the Lok Sabha to 22, further deepening the crisis.
