A 27-year-old man’s journey, shared in a now-viral Reddit post, reflects this changing mindset. After spending nearly seven years in a demanding corporate role, he chose to leave city life behind and return to his hometown, Udaipur. There, he began building a homestay business, starting small and gradually scaling it into a steady source of income.
“Switched to a slower life in Udaipur. Lower costs, more flexibility,” the caption of the post reads.
His transition was not impulsive. Instead, it was the result of years of planning and careful execution. He continued working while testing his business idea on the side, slowly expanding operations as he gained confidence. Financial preparedness also played a key role, as he built a safety net before stepping away from his job.
“It’s been a while since I left my corporate job in a metro city and moved back to my hometown, Udaipur, for a quieter life. What started as a small shift slowly turned into a complete lifestyle change,” he wrote.
Today, his primary income comes from running homestays in the tourist city. While earnings fluctuate depending on demand, he shared that his average monthly income is around Rs 1 lakh.
During slower months, it can drop to Rs 40,000-Rs 50,000, but in peak tourist seasons, it can rise to Rs 3-4 lakh. He has also invested in property, using it both as a residence and as part of his business model.
The venture began modestly, with a single room and rented spaces. Initial investments ranged between Rs 2-4 lakh for basic setup and furnishing, while monthly expenses now vary between Rs 20,000 and Rs 40,000 depending on occupancy and maintenance.
Beyond finances, the move has significantly altered his lifestyle. With lower living costs, around Rs 20,000-Rs 30,000 per month, and the absence of daily commutes, he enjoys a more flexible routine. “No daily rush, no traffic, mornings are slower. Time feels more in control compared to a fixed 9-5,” he noted.
However, he also acknowledged the challenges. The lack of a fixed income and structured work environment can create uncertainty, requiring careful financial planning and self-discipline. “This is not perfect. Income is not stable; you need to plan buffers. Some months feel slow and uncertain,” he added.
Online, his story has resonated widely. Many users described it as a dream they often consider but hesitate to pursue. “That’s the dream, isn’t it…” one user commented. Others sought practical insights into his savings, costs, and business strategy.
