Kolkata, Aug 15 (PTI) The Kolkata Metro Railway’s network will expand to around 130 km in the coming years, General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta said on Saturday as the city’s rapid transit system observed
the 80th Independence Day.
Gupta, who hoisted the National Flag at Metro Rail Bhavan, highlighted the expansion plans and recent achievements of the organisation in his Independence Day address.
He said the Metro Railway carried 23.60 crore passengers during 2025-26, underlining the growing role of the rapid transit network in the city’s public transport system.
Metro Railway has also recorded a significant increase in earnings during the current financial year. According to Gupta, it earned Rs 166 crore between April and July 2026, which is 34 per cent higher than the corresponding figure of the previous year.
The general manager also highlighted the increasing use of digital payment facilities by Metro commuters.
Passengers are increasingly using digital modes for purchasing tokens, smart cards and QR code-based tickets as well as for recharging smart cards.
Gupta said commuters can access these facilities conveniently through the ‘Aamar Kolkata Metro’ app, available on Google Play Store and App Store.
Metro Railway authorities are working to further improve safety, passenger amenities and reliability standards, Gupta said. PTI SUS RG
