India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah etched his name into the record books during the first ODI against England at Edgbaston on Tuesday (July 14), becoming the first Indian cricketer to complete the rare
treble of 150 ODI wickets, 200 Test wickets and 100 T20I wickets.
Bumrah came to this match with 121 T20I victims and 234 Test wickets. He reached the 150-wicket mark in ODIs by dismissing the host captain, Harry Brook, in the 14th over of the first innings.
Brook was new to the crease, and Bumrah made his third ball extremely tricky. He came wide of the crease to pretend to angle it in, but used his dexterity to make the ball move away — Brook couldn’t help but push at it and ended up edging it to first slip, where Rohit Sharma took a nice catch.
Only two other cricketers in the world have achieved all three milestones: New Zealand’s Tim Southee (164 in T20Is, 221 in ODIs, and 391 in Tests) and Bangladesh’s Shakib-al-Hasan (149 in T20Is, 317 in ODIs, and 246 in Tests).
Bumrah had not played an ODI since the 2023 World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad. India sorely missed him in the format but had to accept not seeing him because of his workload management.
Now, with the next ODI World Cup only 15 months away, India are bringing him back. His spell at Edgbaston was a remarkable display of just how skillful he is to immediate dominate a format he hasn’t played in for years.
More records that Bumrah broke
The 150th ODI wicket was significant in more ways than one, as it was also Bumrah’s 31st wicket in England, making him the first Indian cricketer to take more than 30 wickets on English soil.
He went past Ravindra Jadeja’s 30 scalps. Among pacers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar is the best with 28.
Bumrah also became the second-fastest Indian pacer to reach 150 ODI wickets, getting there in just 90 matches. Only Mohammed Shami (80) and Kuldeep Yadav (88) got there in fewer games for India.
